NEBOSH Environmental Diploma

Tony Brookes - Clean Estates Operations & QSHE Manager, recently attended a graduation ceremony held at Warwick University for successful award of the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma.

NEBOSH was set up 30 years ago to improve health and safety in the workplace by ensuring that safety professionals had the competence, knowledge and skills to evaluation risks and determine appropriate sensible control measures.

The NEBOSH Environmental Diploma is designed to equip health and safety practitioners with an appropriate professional level qualification, to undertake responsibilities in relation to the risks of damage to the environment posed by work activities.

Training was provided by AVIVA risk management which enables holders of this award to:
  •  advise management on the likely environmental impact of an organisation’s
     activities and the action needed to avoid or minimise the harmful effects;
  •  arrange for appropriate action to be taken either by themselves or in
     co-operation with other specialist staff;
  •  appreciate the inter-relationship between actions taken to protect
     workpeople and those taken to protect the environment so that the
     best combination of measures is adopted.

With increased focus on environmental awareness and responsibilities that are required of Contractors, this award is significant in helping to secure and maintain Clean Estates Approved Contractor Status with both existing and new clients.

TCL, the landscape services group, is pleased to announce that it has acquired the estate management business, Clean Estates Limited.

The acquisition represents further progress in the implementation of TCL's strategy to create a leading national landscape services and facilities management business and builds upon the acquisition of Admiral Play and Arbscapes, both undertaken over the last 18 months.

Clean Estates Awarded OHSAS 18001

There is growing pressure from clients for suppliers to demonstrate improvements to all service areas and particularly with regard to Health & Safety Management.

Clean Estates has held both ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 certification for a number of years. Earlier this year the company sought better recognition of its high standards of Health & Safety and Environmental Management procedures and as a result ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 were re-awarded to Clean Estates by BSI accredited by UKAS - The United Kingdom Accreditation Service.

UKAS is the sole national accreditation body recognised by government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

To further demonstrate our commitment to continually improve our systems and procedures within the business, Clean Estates forged ahead and has just been awarded OHSAS 18001 certification through UKAS.

This achievement puts us ahead of many of our competitors that do not hold this well respected industry qualification.

The (OHSAS) specification gives requirements for an occupational health and safety management system, to enable an organisation to control its OH&S risks and improve its performance.

OHSAS 18001
was created via the concerted effort from a number of the world’s leading national standards bodies, certification bodies, and specialist consultancies.

“It is important that those in the business community have a good awareness and understanding of the benefits that accreditation can offer and the services available from UKAS.

As we enter an era of increasingly rapid change, it is important for businesses to be able to demonstrate their products are fit for purpose. The CBI fully endorses the view that, for markets to function properly, purchasers must have confidence the standards are being met.”

Lucy Findlay, Head of Enterprise, CBI

Clean Estates Awarded CHAS Accreditation

CHAS

Clean Estates has recently been awarded CHAS accreditation. The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme is dedicated to completing health and safety pre-qualification assessments to a nationally recognised and accepted threshold standard.

CHAS is established as the market leader for health and safety pre-qualification in the UK and membership extends to health trusts, councils, emergency services, the voluntary sector, housing associations, government departments and private companies who have a supply chain, for example Royal Mail Group and British Aerospace to name but a few.

The CHAS assessment determines the competence of a supplier to the first stage described in the CDM 2007 Approved Code of Practice. ‘A compliant supplier has demonstrated they have adequate compliance with current legislation and sound management of health and safety.’

"CHAS has revolutionised the way we have undertaken H&S competency checks of our contractors.”
Sheffield City Council, 2009.
